To celebrate Walt's annual visit to California we made ribs and a green salad with grilled summer squash and corn. It was so much fun to stand at the grill (okay, the grill pan) and monitor the vegetables. I felt like a man. The lettuce was the spicy mix from Kenter Canyon Farms at the Hollywood Farmers' Market. (The diced tofu was for the baby.) The dressing was this:
juice of one lime
shake of cayenne
s & p
squirt of agave nectar
about a tsp. canola oil
It tasted like summer.
Oh, by the way, while we were at said Farmers' Market buying this produce, we got lunch from the new, and all vegan, Soul Vegetarian stand. Paul and I shared a $10 combo plate that was piled high with mac and cheese, kale, black eyed peas and rice, and "barbecue delite" which was a seitan sorta dish. We also shared a tasty little sweet potato pie for dessert. The food was simple and comforting. The beans and greens could have used a pinch of salt, but the mac and cheese was the best vegan version I have ever had. The barbecue was delicious with a fairly satisfying meaty texture. They also have a restaurant on Pico where I imagine this comfort food would be served in more comfortable surroundings. The Hollywood Farmers' Market needs some more tables and shade, man. Eating on the curb with a baby is gross.
