I had no plan at the market this week. Desmond and I just barely squeezed in before the farmers packed up their crates. I quickly snagged my lemons. They were my priority as I can't waste a moment of the meyer lemon season, plus I have my heart set on a classic tart this week. I grabbed the carrots and celery, because those are just staples. Then I had time for the impulse items - basil because I have been craving pesto since last Friday night when I shared a great sandwich with my best gal at Pure Luck. Then brussels sprouts because I've been lusting for them ever since reading this recipe. And finally asparagus, just because they were there - now that I see them in the photo, they look a little sad, I probably should have been patient, but meh, what do I live in Southern California for, if not to eat asparagus in February?
This week's Farmers' Market haul:
8 limes
8 meyer lemons
brussels sprouts
basil
2 loaves bread (a couple of bakers sell their wares at the market)
1 bunch carrots
several stalks of celery
1 small bunch asparagus
______
$19.25
By the way, a couple weeks back a reader named Janell proposed the idea of a produce exchange, I don't know if there is anyone out there that would be interested, or if there is already an established avenue for this sort of thing (my cursory searches netted nothing) but leave a comment if you are interested or if you know of an organization that does this. Thanks.
