I'm assuming that you, like everybody else in the country, are either getting over this cold, in the midst of this cold, or getting this cold, and so today rather than rhapsodizing about what's in the market (Who knows? I haven't been out of the house in ages!) I am going to tell you about my father-in-law. You see, when you're sick, he'll make you a hot buttered rum, and as my friend Martha would say, that's a good thing ("It's a good thing?" What's her catch phrase? I don't have a TV, and Martha and I aren't really that tight anyway. I just like to call people friend. Shoot I need a catch phrase.) So I have moved beyond soup, orange juice, and peppermint tea, and onto hot alcoholic beverages, but just before bed, and really one's best. Though after you have one you'll probably think that two or three would be better, but just take my word for it, it's not.
Hot Buttered Rum
2 ounces rum
1 teaspoon sugar
a tiny bit of earth balance
hot water to fill
Stir. Sip. Sleep.
Notes: This recipe is perfect as is, but if I could make it to the grocery store AND afford a new jar of coconut oil, I would make this tropical variation of a cross between the above recipe and grog: a squeeze of lime juice, some fresh ginger, sugar, a tiny bit of virgin coconut oil, and the rum and hot water. So if you're looking to zazz up your sick cocktail repertoire, give that a try and report back.
Photo Note: Those vegetables are so much prettier than a dimly lit image of my stained mug.
