You know Garlic-Onion-Beet-Spinach-Mango-Carrot-Grapefruit Juice, right? Well, I am so excited to tell you that just in time for Thanskgiving, the author of that book, Nathalie VanBalen, has busted out a coloring zine, and it's adorable. It approaches its message more directly than her previous book does. On the second page she out and tells you:
There isn't a turkey on our table
and we're happy to tell you why -
because turkeys are friends (like cats and dogs)
and feathered friends must fly!
In that way it reminds me of Ruby Roth's book for kids, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals, but as you can see, Nathalie has such a gentle, sweet voice that even when she comes close to the subject of factory farming (never farther than a mention of cages), I still want to sit down with a plate of warm cookies and listen.
Both the art work and her simple poem are just perfect for sharing with a thoughtful kid (of any age - you know you love to color). And the meditative act of coloring together is an ideal way to talk things over. I just love this. I hope she does more. You can get your own on Nathalie's website for 5 bucks (including shipping).
